The remote villages of North Cornwall are not like the rest of the county. The bright lights of Truro and the A30 (Cornwall’s northern star) seem light years away as you’re bouncing through endless country lanes, trying desperately to get phone signal so you can scream your last Will & Testament to Siri in case you never make it out. Once you get north of Bude there’s a sneaking suspicion that if you stop to ask for directions you’ll be captured by the locals and burned in a giant wicker pasty, in order to appease Rattlós (the God of Cider).
Fortunately for us (and unfortunate for Rattlós), this perception is as untrue as it is insanely over the top. The locals at The Old Orchard Inn, Week St Mary were extremely welcoming, friendly, fun and GOOD GOD do they know how to party. This was our second time back, and we’ll very happily accept another invite, just to soak up the fun times this place has to offer.
When we arrived the atmosphere was already at a high, due to the fact that the sun had decided to show its face that afternoon. It didn’t exactly ‘have its hat on’, but it was most certainly looking up recent pictures of Pharrell Williams with a wistful sigh. And after the weather we’ve recently had, a nice day was all anyone needed!! As we were sound checking people of all ages were already getting settled, ordering drinks, laughing, chatting sunshine and enjoying themselves. And then we started to play.
This was one of our all time favourite gigs. We haven’t had many at this point, but that’s going to be a hard one to beat. We had everyone in the hugely packed pub singing, dancing and throwing shapes like a riot in a polygon factory. Lucy even managed to get a call & response from the room next door! Despite battling a heavy cold! In heels!
We threw in a few new numbers that night: Tainted Love (not the 80s one) and Sex on Fire, which went down an absolute storm. What a night! If you haven’t paid The Old Orchard a visit, we strongly suggest you do. Tell Jason, Cindy and Annabel the Strutts say hi.
Once again a massive ‘thank you’ to the guys at Cabin Fever Audio for providing a perfect back line and sound for the evening. We start our first round of private functions next week, and if any of them are as good as that: they won’t know what hit them.
Over and out.
